He's been recording for the album since 2008. He was trying to release it for a while, since 2009, but record labels did not let him release it due to its content which had to do with politics and his own beliefs, so he kept recording tracks while fans made and then signed a pension for Lupe to release Lasers. So now, Lasers is out thanks to Lupe’s fans, but under the condition that the record label choses the songs on the album. So as an album made for Lupe's fans, was it worth the wait? Or was making the pension for releasing the album just a waste of time? Lasers had so many different sounds. Something that has been missing in music in general lately, mainly because many artists focus on just one, or a maximum of two different sounds on their albums, especially with their production. But looking at Lasers, Lupe had up-tempo club inspired beats, uplifting tracks with right beats to fit them, alternative rock inspired tracks, and sometimes tracks with a mixture between more than one style. The album talked about many different subject matters as well. Lupe talked about being lost and not being sure about himself in the alternative rock inspired song "Letting Go". He switched to being political in this year's best song so far "Words I Never Said", where he commented on the war on terror, terrorism in general, the poor education in the US, the poor banking system and much, and the really cool thing about this track, which separated it from other political tracks was that it had more of an electronic, mainstream inspired beat. He had a song about self-appreciation called "Till I Get There" which was great, but not one of the best on the album. He talked about rising to the top from nothing, and how a lot of people should do that and only listen to themselves because only they are sure of themselves on "The Show Goes On" which was the most uplifting track, and one of the best tracks on the album. He talked about black history in "All Black Everything" which could have had a better hook and beat, but none the less was still a strong track. He talks about living a tough life and considering suicide in "Two Ways" which was one of the best on the album. He talks about the repetitive and dumbed down music on “State Run Radio” which was another alternative rock inspired tracks on this album, and he talked about freedom and reaching it in the uplifting, yet club inspired track "Break The Chain". Not all the tracks in the album had a serious subject matter though. "I Don't Wanna Care Right Now" was a pure up-tempo, club inspired hip-hop track, but still, it was one of the best on the album, and honestly the best club inspired hip-hop track I have ever heard, and "Out Of My Head" was mainly a pop-rap track, it had a strong mainstream beat, it had a great hook, and Lupe rapped some great verses about a girl who he can’t get out of his head. Lasers was exactly how an album for the fans should be. It was something very different, yet at the same time something fans of many music genes and many sub-genres of hip-hop would for sure love or enjoy. it had multiple styles, and multiple different subject matters. Lasers was obviously almost flawless, if it wasn't for the slightly weaker tracks, then it would be all the way at the top with Eminem's or Tupac's best albums, but none the less, it's right behind Em's and Pac's albums, as one of the best in hip-hop history, thanks to its most memorable aspect, which was clearly it’s theme: mainstream production but at the same time underground based lyrics. |
